Mark Mulder Retires From Baseball (Maybe)

Mark Mulder, a one time Cy Young Runner-Up and two time all-star, retired today. Mulder was considering returning to baseball with the Brewers because he had played under Brewers manager Ken Macha and new pitching coach Rick Peterson with the Oakland Athletics. Peterson had been in contact with Mulder all winter trying to convince him to give it one last try and the Brewers offered him a minor league contract last month. Yet Mulder wasn't able to commit himself to such a comeback after missing most of the last two seasons with a rotator cuff injury. This move doesn't have too much of an implication for the Brewers; it is likely that if he had signed, he would have had to spend some time in the minors and would've merely provided depth for the Brewers in case something had happened to their starting pitching. Mulder finished his career 103-60, with a 4.18 ERA. He played nine seasons with the Athletics and Cardinals.

UPDATE: Mulder's agent now claims that Mulder hasn't actually decided yet. We'll keep you posted...
