Joe Posnanski wrote a compelling piece on Frank Thomas that got me thinking of the best non steroid hitters of our era. He notes how unbelievable Frank Thomas' first 8 season stats were and how he compares to other greats of his time. He has very similar number in his first 8 years to maybe the best right handed hitter of all time, Albert Pujols.
While we are in a generation where you never know who used and who didn't. It is clear that Frank Thomas has been one of the biggest advocates against steroids. Looking like he could truck a linebacker maybe would make people skeptical of his steroid use, however even before steriods use was made public he was on the band wagon for more testing. Throughout his career he hinted that others were taking "shortcuts" that he refused to take. He has wanted to make steroids a bigger deal because he was not one of the people using them. I encourage you to read Posnanski's article above and try to think of a better hitter of this era. The only other person I would say is right there with him is Ken Griffey Jr. Although both Thomas' and Griffey's end of their careers have been plagued with injuries maybe that just shows you want happens to older bodies when you play 162 games a year... the natural thing, break down.
After reading this article is clear that Frank Thomas should be a first ballot Hall of Famer!
BUT THAT'S JUST MY TWO CENTS FROM THE NOSE BLEEDS!!
