Fielder Extension Talk
There has been discussion lately on whether the Brewers will be able to sign Prince Fielder to a long-term extension past 2011. Brewers owner Mark Attanasio has publicly stated that the Brewers are prepared to offer Prince a very large contract in the near future, probably somewhat similar to CC Sabathia's 9-figure offer last offseason. A large issue with Fielder is that he's represented by Scott Boras who always tries to get every last penny out of his clients, which makes people believe Prince will either be wearing pinstripes or red sox in a couple years. ESPN's Buster Olney claims that Prince's best option may be taking the Brewers offer though, as the Yanks have Mark Teixeira and the Red Sox are going strong after Adrian Gonzalez of the Padres. I can't read the entire article since I don't have ESPN Insider, but I feel that Olney has left out the fact that both teams play in the American League and could very easily stick Prince at DH. I would love to see the Brewers sign him, as it would show a real commitment to winning for the organization. And just imagine Braun and Fielder hitting 3-4 for the next 5 years. That could turn out to be one of the most lethal combos in history (Plus I want to see more of their awesome boxer/trainer home run celebration).

uhhh yeah i dont even think the yankees are going to pay 20-25 million a year for a d.h.
ReplyDeletethey are the yankees. of course they will.
ReplyDeleteThe Yankees probably won't go after them. Sox may not get Adrian Gonzalez but if they do I can't see them going after Fielder. Finally the Mets have said they are looking towards going younger at that position. I think maybe the Angels or Dodgers could go after him with them having James Loney at 1st. I could also see a few other teams trying to build their team around Prince. Maybe a team like the Astros giving Prince a large contact.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone has ever mentioned it- but to me the teams that make the most sense and the cubs and white sox. Derek lee is 34 years old this year- turns 35 in September. By time prince signs he is 36 and will be turning 37 later in the year. In a post steroids league- expecta dramatic drop off in the next two years and with one of the top payrolls in the league - able to pay the man. He also knows te nl central well and wouldn't have any adjustment to te pitchers.
ReplyDeleteI would atleast get to see him a few times a year here!
White sox obviously make sense with aging 1b and dh and a large payroll. Don't think he is a Yankee but a Chicago resident.
It would sting to have prince as a cub but that and white sox are very legitimate options... I think that the Brewers will put up big money for fielder that would be comparable to those two teams though...
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's a good idea for a small market team to commit just under 1/3 of their payroll (it'll take about 25 mil/season) to one player. A small market team cannot afford that. Look at how bad Hall and Suppan have held the Brewers hostage? That's "only" 20 mil. 25 mil/year is too much for someone who is a liability on defense. Trade him for what you can and thank him for his services, unless he will give a hometown discount, which Boras will not do unless Prince has some say in the matter.
ReplyDeleteAlso, not to mention that Fielder will likely overestimate his market value. Hard hitting players are a dime a dozen in this league. Granted, Prince is something special, but regardless top notch pitching is much more rare. I would rather the Brewers commit 20-25 mil/season to a top pitcher than a 1B who can be replaced easier than a top pitcher.
ReplyDeleteTrade him for some good prospects and make it a better TEAM
